Romantic Alpine Resorts
By Krista Dana
Stunning mountain scenery, tiny old villages, and
hospitality that's world-renowned - what more could Cupid
ask?
The European Alps offer some of the planet's most
romantic ski destinations, and we've rounded up a few of
the best below. So, what fits your Valentine's fancy?
Whether it's great food, fabulous skiing, or the peace of
a car-free village, these destinations deliver:
MÜRREN, SWITZERLAND
This tiny car-free village perches atop a rock cliff
above Lauterbrunnen in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland.
Connected by mountain train, cable car, and lifts to
Wengen and Grindelwald, this tiny hamlet is well situated
for multi-resort skiing. A single street of old chalets
house comfortable hotels and a nightlife surprisingly
lively for a village this small.
SAAS-FEE, SWITZERLAND
Known for its high-altitude, snow-sure slopes and for
its high-tech lift system, Saas-Fee has long been popular
with the Europe's rich and famous. Today, designer shops
mingle with ancient chalets (and fur coats mingle with
snowboards)along the village's car-free streets.
ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND
Nestled at the base of the Matterhorn in a long
pastoral valley, Zermatt offers stunning scenery, great
mountain dining, and excellent, expensive lodging. Visitors
park their cars in Tasch and ride the train up to the
village - a procedure that, in theory, should make Zermatt
a quiet place. Instead, electric taxis buzz through town,
and tourists crowd the village's narrow streets. The
mountains are beautiful and the town is quaint, but quiet
Zermatt is not.
COURMAYEUR, ITALY
Spectacular views of Mont Blanc and a romantic
pedestrian center make this quaint village the most
romantic ski destination in Italy. The food is delicious,
the cafes are stylish, and the people are friendly. Also
popular as a climbing base, a spa town,and a cross-country
skiing destination, Courmayeur is sure to please.
(Since the, um, "temporary" closure of the Mont
Blanc tunnel, cross-border skiing to Chamonix is no longer
an option.)
LECH & ZÜRS, AUSTRIA
Neighbors Lech and Zürs together remain Austria's
most exclusive ski destination. Excellent in-town dining,
posh hotels, designer shops, and an upscale après-ski
scene make this a perfect destination for lovers looking
for luxury.
Oberlech, a tiny ski-in hamlet 200 meters above town,
offers car-free accommodation, and lift-linked access to
St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, and Zug expand skiing
options.
