A lightweight, compact kit which provides the basic essentials for an emergency in the backcountry.
Rock & Ice recently rated the Arva 9000 Avalanche Transceiver at the top of the heap (issue #89). Due to its use of digital technology, the Arva is now one of the most popular beacons in central Europe. Directional accuracy and ease of use plus a slim profile and comfortable harness make the Arva 9000 a great choice. The Arva 9000 uses digital technology to automatically process directional and distance information then presents it with simple audio and visual indicators for quick navigation. The Arva 9000 avalanche beacon switches on when you click the harness strap into it (via magnetic contact). This beacon has a range of approximately 60 meters and operates at 457 Khz, like all the beacons we sell.
Brand new for the 2001 season, the Ortovox M2 avalanche beacon has a faster pulse rate and an 80 meter search range.
The Ortovox F1 Focus avalanche beacon is widely used by ski patrollers in the US and Europe.
Arva Bip Transmitter
The Arva Life Bip 3 Avalanche Rescue Transmitter Belt The Arva Bip 3 has many applications. A transmitter only, the Bip is a handy device to have when skiing in resort at any area where avalanche hazard exists. While most avalanche patrol experts do a great job, it's inevitable that every once in a while one will get past them. An Arva Bip may just save your life on such an occasion. Other uses for a Bip might include finding your camp in a blizzard. (throw a bip in your tent when you leave camp and on your return if whiteout conditions exist search for your campsite using your avalanche beacon). Some people also put a bip on their dog but we don't recommend this as you could end up digging up your dog while your girlfriend remains buried nearby! 457 kHz, compatible with any Arva avalanche tranceiver. Autonomy : more than 100 hours. Range : 60 m maximum
This advanced beacon utilizes easy to follow led icons which direct you to the buried avalanche victim FAST! The signal arrow gives you signal strength while a digital readout gives you the distance in meters (beginning at 50 meters). The industry leader, Ortovox has an excellent track record in avalanche rescue and this new beacon lives up to that reputation. Measuring 5.6" x 2.4" x 1", this avalanche transceiver is a tad narrower and a tad longer than the F1 focus. The M1 is also curved to fit comfortably against your body.
Pieps Opti-4 avalanche beacon
The Opti-4 uses an arc of lights which show increasing signal strength while emitting a "pieping" sound (now a deeper more audable pitch) to lead you quickly in to the signal. You simply orientate yourself so that the signal is the strongest and march forward. When all four lights are lit up, turn the knob on top decreasing the sensitivity and do it again (note, as with all beacons, you will likely follow a curved path to the signal as you follow the magnetic flux line). The combined audio and visual feedback of the Pieps Opti-4 create a highly intuitive system. The Pieps Opti-4 operates exclusively on the world standard 457 kHz frequency. This is a name which is trusted by ski patrollers worldwide. All PIEPS avalanche transcievers come with a 5 year warranty.
The Black Diamond Avalung is one of the most important developments in avalanche safety since the avalanche beacon.
